UN Inquiry Finds War Crimes by Both Israel and Hamas in Gaza Conflict

Meta Description: A new UN inquiry has found that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes and grave violations of international law during the first few months of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The damning report paints a disturbing picture of both sides disregarding international laws.

In a damning report released on June 12, 2024, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry found that both Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity since the start of the latest conflict in Gaza in October 2023. The 200-page report covers events up to the end of 2023, painting a grim picture of the escalating violence that has now raged for over 8 months.

The inquiry, based on interviews with victims and witnesses, as well as forensic analysis of thousands of open-source items, found that on October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched a coordinated murder and kidnapping spree in southern Israel. This attack killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw some 250 people taken hostage. The UN labeled these actions as war crimes, including intentionally directing attacks against civilians, murder, torture, and taking hostages.

In response, the report states that Israel committed its own war crimes and crimes against humanity in the first 2.5 months of the conflict. These alleged violations include starvation, arbitrary detention, and the killing and maiming of "tens of thousands of children." Both sides were also found to have committed sexual violence, torture, and intentionally attacking civilians.

The UN Commission's findings add to the growing body of evidence against the key players in this conflict. Last month, the International Criminal Court announced it was seeking arrest warrants for several top Hamas and Israeli leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

This latest UN report is a devastating indictment of the actions taken by both Israel and Hamas since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023. It paints a bleak picture of a conflict that has caused immense suffering for civilians on both sides, with little regard for international laws and human rights.

As the world watches on in horror, it is clear that urgent action is needed to bring this conflict to an end and hold those responsible to account. The international community must come together to demand a ceasefire and the initiation of meaningful peace talks, while also supporting efforts to investigate and prosecute the war crimes that have been committed.
