Russia's Latest Deadly Weapon in the Ukraine War: The 3,000kg Glide Bomb
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen Russia introduce increasingly destructive weapons, and a recent report suggests they have now deployed a new deadly glide bomb weighing a staggering 3,000kg. This powerful munition, known as the Fab-3000, is packed with over a ton of explosives and threatens to inflict even greater devastation on Ukrainian forces and civilians.
According to reports, the first test of the Fab-3000 glide bomb was recently captured on video by a Kremlin-approved Russian military blogger. The footage shows the massive bomb slamming into a building in the village of Lyptsi, just northeast of the key city of Kharkiv. The impact creates a huge crater and engulfs the entire three-story structure in a massive fireball, with the building's roof being completely ripped off.
Earlier versions of these glide bombs, the Fab-500 and Fab-1500, have already taken a heavy toll, killing hundreds if not thousands of Ukrainians. Aid workers in Kharkiv report that the destructive power of these weapons has even made bomb shelters irrelevant, with one stating: "If a glide bomb hits then you've just got no hope."
The new Fab-3000 variant is said to be twice as heavy and twice as destructive as its predecessors. Fragments of the bomb are claimed to retain their destructive power up to 1,240 meters away, and the blogger suggests that multiple Fab-3000s could be unleashed in a single attack.
This development marks a significant escalation in Russia's aerial bombardment campaign against Ukraine. The glide bombs' extended range and GPS-guided navigation make them extremely difficult for Ukrainian air defenses to intercept, allowing Russia to strike targets deep within the country.
The Institute for the Study of War, a prominent think tank monitoring the conflict, has described the introduction of the Fab-3000 as a "significant development" that will "increase the destructive potential of Russia's ongoing glide bomb attacks against Ukrainian forces and infrastructure."
While Ukrainian officials have acknowledged the video evidence, they note that physical fragments of the weapon have not yet been submitted for examination. Nevertheless, the footage has sparked renewed calls for the international community to do more to address the threat posed by these devastating glide bombs.
As the war in Ukraine rages on, the introduction of the Fab-3000 glide bomb serves as a grim reminder of Russia's willingness to employ increasingly powerful and indiscriminate weapons. The destruction caused by these munitions has had a devastating impact on both Ukrainian military personnel and civilians, highlighting the urgent need for effective countermeasures and international intervention.
