Federal Jury Convicts Hunter Biden on Felony Gun Charges
On June 11, 2024, a federal jury found President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, guilty on all three federal felony gun charges he faced. The charges stemmed from laws meant to prevent drug addicts from owning firearms.
According to CNN's reporting, the jury concluded that Hunter Biden violated these laws when he purchased a handgun in 2018 despite being a known drug user at the time. Federal law prohibits individuals who are "unlawful users of or addicted to any controlled substance" from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The three charges Hunter Biden was convicted of are:
- Making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm
- Possession of a firearm by a drug user
- Possession of ammunition by a drug user
The charges each carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
This conviction marks a significant legal and political development, as Hunter Biden has faced numerous scandals and investigations over the years related to his business dealings and drug use. The federal charges were the result of a years-long investigation by the Justice Department.
CNN's senior legal affairs correspondent Paula Reid broke down the details of the case, noting that prosecutors were able to show evidence that Hunter Biden lied on the federal form required to purchase the firearm, stating that he was not a drug user. However, the jury found that the evidence clearly demonstrated he was an unlawful drug user at the time.
The conviction could have broader implications beyond just Hunter Biden himself. It may fuel further investigations and scrutiny of the Biden family's business dealings and ethical conduct. Republicans have long raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and abuse of power related to Hunter Biden's international business ties while his father was Vice President and then President.
