Biden Targets Trump's Legal Troubles in $50M Ad Blitz Ahead of First Debate
As the 2024 US presidential election draws near, President Joe Biden's campaign is taking an aggressive approach in highlighting Donald Trump's ongoing legal troubles. With just over a week until the first debate between the two candidates, Biden has launched a $50 million ad campaign that paints Trump as a "convicted criminal" unfit for the presidency.
The 30-second ad, titled "Character Matters," wastes no time in outlining Trump's extensive legal woes. The narrator notes that the former president has been "convicted of 34 felonies" and "found liable for sexual assault," while also perpetrating "financial fraud." These references are to Trump's criminal conviction in New York for falsifying business records, a civil trial in which he was found to have raped writer E. Jean Carroll, and a separate case in which his company was found guilty of massive fraud.
In contrast, the ad highlights Biden's work to "lower health care costs" and "make big corporations pay their fair share" - presenting the election as a choice between "a convicted criminal who's only out for himself and a president who's fighting for your family."
This marks a noticeable shift from the Biden campaign's previous reluctance to weigh in on Trump's legal troubles, likely out of concern for appearing to meddle in the justice system. However, with an unprecedented number of felony convictions against a former US president, the Biden team seems to have concluded that highlighting Trump's character issues is a necessary and effective electoral strategy.
The ad campaign is set to run across battleground states as well as on national cable, with a significant portion of the $50 million budget targeted at reaching Black, Hispanic and Asian American voters. This underscores the Biden campaign's belief that emphasizing Trump's criminality could be a potent mobilizing force, particularly among key demographic groups.
Notably, the new offensive comes as polls show a tight race, with Trump holding a slight edge in crucial swing states despite his legal woes. Biden's team is clearly hoping that repeatedly reminding voters of Trump's status as a "convicted felon" can tip the scales in their favor.
Readers, what are your thoughts on Biden's strategy of aggressively targeting Trump's legal troubles in the run-up to the first debate? Do you believe this approach will resonate with voters, or could it backfire? I encourage you to share your perspectives in the comments below.
